Our Governance

For Jimmy is a registered Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO), charity number 1156974 (previously known as The Jimmy Mizen Foundation, registered charity number 1130228). It is governed by its constitution, which was last amended on the 14th of September 2015. Our constitution is available here for download.

Our subsidiaries

Our subsidiary, The Cafe of Good Hope Limited (Company Number: 07402254) is governed by the Board of Trustees through appointed working groups and committees.

The Board of Trustees

Our Board of Trustees has a maximum of twelve and a minimum of three trustees. They are appointed by the board during trustees meeting. The board meets at least four times a year.

Our Trustees

Anyone older than 18 can act as a Trustee for For Jimmy, unless s/he is disqualified from doing so under the Charities Act 2011. A trustee who has served for two consecutive terms (each term lasts three years) must take a break of at least a year from the role.

Our trustees comprise two honorary positions of chair and vice chair.

Bill Griffiths has been a Trustee of For Jimmy since 2013 and took up the Chair position in May 2016. He is inspired by the creative altruism emanating from Barry and Margaret Mizen MBEs since their son was killed and proud of Jimmy’s legacy. Bill is a former Metropolitan police officer (1967-2005) retiring as Deputy Assistant Commissioner and Director of Serious Crime Operations having been heavily involved in the changes arising from the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry. He served an additional five years as Director of Leadership Development. Bill was awarded the BEM for Gallantry in 1974, the QPM in 1966 and appointed CBE in 2007. He is now a self-employed consultant, coach and speaker specialising in critical incident management, leadership development and strategic advice/review within the public sector.

Kerry has been involved with For Jimmy since 2009 and before becoming a Trustee chaired our Fundraising Committee. Prior to 2009, she volunteered as a reading and skills partner running programmes in underperforming schools in Tower Hamlets. Kerry has enjoyed a long and successful career in the Financial Services Industry working for Blue Chip companies across many areas including control, governance, legal, operations, finance and front office. Within these disciplines, her passion has always been in people leadership and development and project management. Building the right culture is something close to her heart and in 2008 Kerry was awarded for her work in diversity and inclusion. In 2014, she set up her own business and is now a qualified coach, NLP Master Practitioner & Trainer. A local resident in Lee, her most important role is as mum to her son who can often be seen participating in the For Jimmy events.

Bridget Prentice

Bridget Prentice

Bridget Prentice was the Member of Parliament for Lewisham East from 1992 until she retired in 2010. She served as a Government Whip and as a Minister for Justice with responsibility for the courts, electoral administration, and legal services amongst others. She has been a borough councillor, a teacher and a magistrate and is a trustee of several local charities including Age Exchange. She is a Patron of Grove Park Community Group and a Governor of Trinity School. Bridget presently runs her own business as an independent consultant with the Pampered Chef and separately advises and trains individuals and organisations who have to negotiate with public and government authorities. A Glaswegian by birth, she lives locally with her partner and three cats. Bridget joined the board because she believes it reflects her passionate belief that it is important to give young people hope, inspiration and aspiration.

Wendy Phillips

Wendy Phillips is currently a Learning Mentor at St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School. Over the past twelve year’s, she has been sitting on the board of governors for the school. Currently, she is appointed on the Resources Committee which involves looking at finances, policies and tenders. She enjoys her role and the knowledge that it has given her on all aspects of the rigors that are required to ensure that the school is governed, lead and financed with diligence and that the pupils’ academic and social needs are met.

Our Committees

Governance, Risk and Control Committee

The committee researches, monitors and advises the Board on its due diligence function as well as its legal and moral obligations as guardians of For Jimmy.

Remuneration Committee

The committee sets the chief executive and the executive team’s remuneration and considers HR policy and related matters, including pensions.

Finance Committee

The committee provides independent advice and assurance on policies and procedures to ensure the financial sustainability and growth of For Jimmy.

We are proud to have Nick Kavanagh (FCA CTA) and Dimitrios Alafouzos (MEng, MIET, Chartered MCSI, FCCA) as co-opted members of our finance committee.

Safe-guarding Committee

The committee identifies and implements appropriate policies and procedures to safeguard and promote the welfare of all service users, staff, volunteers and partners at For Jimmy.

Our safe-guarding officers are Miles Carabine, Bill Mizen and Wendy Philipps.
